Size: Average 75 centimeters, maximum 1.2 meters.
Appearance: Smooth-scaled snake that is a pale shade of blue with black bands. Its oarlike tail provides propulsion in swimming.
Type of Venom: Its venom is a very strong neurotoxin.
Nature: Most active at night, swimming close to shore and at times entering tide pools.
Distribution: Coastal waters of New Guinea, Pacific islands, the Philippines, Southeast Asia, Sri Lanka, and Japan.
Habitat: Common in all oceans, absent in the Atlantic Ocean.
Feeds on: Mainly fish.
Side Line:
- Its victims are usually fishermen who untangle these deadly snakes from large fish nets. Most bites are reported on the legs.
- The snake has deadly venom inorder to stun the pray as soon as it strikes. Its pray usually consists of fish, which too far swift than the snake is. So, on the course of evolution it has gained a venom that is so potent that the victim suffocates to death in minuits !
- It is a back fang snake, the fangs are small and located slightly at the back of the buccal cavity.
