Malayan pit viper
Scientific Name: Callaselasma rhodostoma
Nick Name:
Size: Average 60 centimeters, maximum 1 meter.
Appearance: Reddish running into pink tinge toward the belly with triangular-shaped, brown markings bordered with light-colored scales. The base of the triangular-shaped markings end at the midline. It has dark brown, arrow-shaped markings on the top and each side of its head.
Type of Venom: Its venom is hemotoxic, destroying blood cells and tissue, but a victim's chances of survival are good with medical aid.
Majority of people in regions like combodia are illiterate. They seek the help from the local healers who often tie cloths at joints to prevent the circulation of venom. Of course it will save their lives but if tied for too long, the bitten arm or the limb starts rotting by the time they seek proper medical attention; and hence results in amputation of the organ. This is one of the reasons why people often lose their arms and limbs as a result of the snake bite.
Nature: It is ill-tempered snake and is responsible for many bites.
Distribution: Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Java, Sumatra, Malaysia, Vietnam, Burma, and China.
Habitat: Rubber plantations, farms, rural villages, and rain forests.
Feeds on: Rats, small birds, lizards and amphibians.
